Party Poker has been online since may 2001, and has been the biggest online poker room of the world since these days. Since October 2006 Party Poker has given up the race against Poker Stars to keep this position in the online poker scene. All this was because of the new law introduced in the USA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) that made online poker illegal for US citizens. Nowadays there are a maximum of 40,000 players online in the peak hours. This means Party Poker is now the number 2 poker room in the world.
The popularity of Party Poker was raising when the first 1 million guaranteed live tournament was organized in 2002 by Party Poker. Since everybody was able to qualify for the $8,000 buy-in tournament for as less as $29, poker players around the world tried to qualify for this tournament. After this tournament many players just sticked to Party Poker and the biggest online poker room was born.
The success story continued when Party Poker decided to sponsor the World Poker Tour (WPT) in 2003. After this event the popularity of Party Poker was at his greatest.
