
Texas Holdem Poker Terms
Aces up
Two pair with one pair of Aces and another pair.
Action
Any action at the table (bet, raise, fold, check or call).
Active Player
You are considered an active player if you are still in the hand.
Aggressive action
An aggressive action could make a player win the bot without a showndown (a bet/raise or reraise).
All blue
A Flush of clubs or spades.
All-in
If a player puts all his money into the pot he is considered to be all-in.
All pink
A flush of diamonds or hearts.
Ante
A fixed amount besides the blind that has to be paid by all players before the hand starts.
Back door
A hand is considered a back door is you were not drawing for it. For example a backdoor straight when you were drawing a flush.
Back raise
Same as re-raise. Raise any other players raise.
Bad beat
A hand can be considered as bad beat if the player has very less percentage to win the hand, but still wins.
Bet
Putting money in the pot. Betting the flop means you come out start betting.
Big blind
Large blind that has to be placed by the player on the left of the small blind.
Blank
A community card is considered a blank card if it has no adding value to the other community cards.
Blind
Required bet that has to be made of the two players on the left of the button.
Bluff
A bet or raise if you don’t have a good percentage to win the hand.
Board
Total of community cards.
Board Card
Any community card.
Bottom pair
The lowest pair that can be made on the current board.
Button
Position of the dealer.
Buy-in
The money that is required to play in the tournament.
Check
Not raising and not folding.
Check-raise
Checking your hand to make a reraise when any other player raises.
Cold call
Just calling a bet or raise.
Common card
A faced up card dealt by the dealer when there are no cards left in the deck for each player (Stud Poker).
Community cards
All cards dealt face up; Flop + Turn + River.
Chase
If you have not many percentage to win the hand, you can chase the hand by just keep on calling raises.
Cut card
The bottom card of the stack when dealing.
Deal
Giving all players their cards. Note that the dealer must wait with shuffling and dealing till the winnner of the pot has received his money.
Dealer button
A button that indicates the dealer position.
Deck
Set of Playing-cards.
Drawing dead
Term used if you won’t even win even if you card you are drawing for falls. For example: You have a King of spades and there are 3 spades on the flop. If another player has 2 spades including the Ace, you are drawing dead.
Dominated
If your hand has three or less out you are being dominated.
Early position
Early position are the positions in the blinds or just left of the blinds. Early position is called a weak position because you have to make a move first.
Face card
Any face; Jack, Queen or King.
Flop
The first three community cards on the table.
Flush
Five cards of the same suit.
Fold
To lay down a hand.
Fourth street
See Turn.
Freeroll
A tournament that is for free entrance and with real money prices.
Full buy
At least the minimal buy-in of a game.
Full house
Three of a kind + one pair.
Hand
In Texas Hold’em this are the two cards that every player received faced down.
Heads up
If there are only two players left in the hand.
Kicker
The highest card of your hand that doesn’t make a pair.
Late position
The late position is considered the best possible position since you can make the decision as last player.
Loose
Loose play is playing many hands.
Loose game
A loose game is a game with many loose players.
Middle Pair
Hitting the middle card of the board.
Middle Position
Position between the early and the late position.
Misdeal
When the dealer makes a mistake and cards needs to be reshuffeled, it’s called a misdeal.
Missed blind
If you did not post the small or big blind when it was your turn.
Muck
Fold the cards faced down.
Must move
A forced replace of a player to another table.
No-limit
A game which has no limit to it’s betting size.
Nuts
The best hand that can be made using the community cards.
Opener
The first player that makes a bet.
Option
The decision the player with a blind can make.
Outs
Number of cards that can help to improve your hand.
Over card
A card of your personal hand that is higher then any card on the board.
Over pair
A pair in your personal hand hat is higher then any pair on the board.
Pass

Passive
Player that does not raise but rather calls of checks.
Play the board
To use all community cards.
Play over
Using the position of a player that is absent.
Play over box
A plastic box that is used to protect the chips of a player that is absent.
Position
Your seat in relation to the position of the button.
Pot-limit
A game with a betting limit of the pot size.
Potting-out
Taking money out of the pot, in agree with other players, to buy something else or making a sidebet.
Proposition bets
Bets made next to the hand of players that are not playing in the hand. (Side bets)
Protected hand
Term used if a player uses a chip or other object to put on the cards when playing a hand.
Push
Replacing of the dealer.
Pushing bets
An agreement between players to return the bets after the hand was played.
Rack
Used by the dealer to keep his chips.
Rags
Cards that should not be played.
Raise
Make a bet more then the minimum bet. Depending on the game and bet limits.
Re-raise
Raising another player that previously raised.
River
The final community card.
Saving-bets

Scramble
Mixing of face down cards, used by some dealers to shuffle the deck.
Setup
Used by the dealer to replace the previous deck by a new deck.
Side pot
A pot created next to the normal pot used if mulitple players go all-in with different stack sizes.
Short buy
Buyin that is less then minimal.
Showdown
A showndown takes place after the last betting round.
Shuffle
A dealer shuffles the deck after every hand.
Small blind
The smallest blind of the game.
Split pot
A split bot is used when multiple players have the same hand.
Stack
Your total amount of chips in the game.
Steal
Betting or raising to scare other playing and steal the pot or the blinds.
Straight
Five unsuited cards in following order.
Straight flush
Five suited cards in following order.
String raise
A not allowed bet. Betting in more then one motion. You need to put all chips for a raise in one motion.
Stub
Part of the deck that is remaining after dealing.
Suited
Cards of the same suit.
Table stakes
Amount of the blinds used on a table.
Tight
A player is considered tight when he only plays very good starting hands and folds easily.
Top Pair
Hitting the highest possible pair on the board.
Tournament
A competition of poker with more then one table.
Turn
The fourth community card dealt by the dealer.
Turncard
The fourt card.
Wager
Size of bet or raise.
Weak
A player is considered weak if the folds to easily.
